Myles Warden for WGA Board

The WGA Poker Group’s very own Myles Warden is running for the WGA Board of Directors. I’ve known him in several roles: friend, writer, guy who won all my poker chips… At every turn (and river), Myles has shown the qualities our guild needs most: honesty, kindness, and a relentless drive to strengthen our community. I invited Myles to share his vision directly with you in the statement below. Please give it a read and remember to vote starting September 4th!

– Aaron Ho, WGA Poker Group Founder

Hi, I’m Myles Warden. I’m a lower-level writer with a focus on half-hour comedy. While I may be newer to the guild, having officially joined right before the strike authorization vote, I hit the ground running, signing up to be a captain and a strike captain literally seconds after my new member meeting ended. During the strike, I was the assistant lot coordinator at Radford. I’m now a member of the Solidarity Steering Committee, the Committee of Black Writers, its subcommittee Strategy & Impact, and I’m a host on the WGA’s 3rd and Fairfax podcast.

Now, I’m running for the board, and there are a couple of key reasons why. One. I’m a true student of the guild, having studied its work and the board’s activities for over a decade before I became a member, and I’d be honored to build upon the work that has been done before me. The second is that I have a knack and a passion for responding to writers’ needs outside of the guild’s parameters, and I’d like to bring this skill set and energy to the board. For example, during the height of lockdown, conversations online took place with showrunners who still valued spec scripts and wanted to read them. However, lower-level writers were saying reps wouldn’t send them out. I reached out to Jackie Penn, and together we created a grid of over 100 specs. The list went viral. Mike Royce saw my spec for a show he had worked on, and loved it so much that he passed it on to reps for me, which led me here today. After the strikes, I started a monthly game night so people who met picketing would have a consistent way to stay in touch. It was a fun way to foster a sense of community.

Today, the reality is, you can have a good year employment-wise and still have a rough year financially. We survived til ‘25, but I’m not trying to stay in the mix til ‘26. I like to gamble, but I wouldn’t bet on next year being better unless we do the work to make it better.

I’m not great at math (which is why I often lose poker games), but I think communication and education will add up to the elevation of our union. Speaking of education, I’d like to create entertaining and informative videos that provide us with info typically received in an email. These videos would also guide us through processes such as paying our dues or determining what work we do for free that we should be compensated for, according to our MBA.

I want to create more social events that foster organic connections for everyone, which will help further careers and strengthen our union as a whole. I’m also interested in strategically organizing more work areas. Bringing more of YouTube and podcasts under the guild is a must, but Verticals is the newest thing that’s rapidly growing, and we can’t wait til it grows as big as YouTube.

During the streaming boom, many lower and mid-level writers, as well as writers of color, broke in. Since the downturn, we’ve taken a big hit. We have to address this.

It’s essential that we ensure writers of every color, at every stage of their career, and from all economic levels can see themselves represented on the board and have a seat at the table, and I’d love a chance to be part of that, while tackling the aforementioned issues as a member of the board.

Your endorsement and vote would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

July 2025 Tournament Recap

The WGA Poker Group’s “Christmas in July” tournament kicked off with sleigh bells ringing and chips clinking in a heatwave of holiday spirit. With 40 players donning festive attire and jockeying for the championship mug, it was a jolly celebration of bluffs, bounties, and all-around poker merriment. And like any family holiday gathering, things got stressful — fast. 🎅⛱️ ☀️

As the last ten players battled to see who would make the final table, a three-way all-in transpired with all the chips going in the middle. Zach Robbins held the 9♥️️5♣️️, AKA “The Dolly Parton.” Jason Mac held the T♥️️T♦️️. Dominating all of them was Jeff Bushell holding the K♠️️K♦️️. The flop came 7♦️️3♦️️2♥️️. No change. The turn brought the 3♠️️. A ten and a ten only would spell doom for Jeff’s pocket kings. Like a lump of coal, the T♣️️dropped on the river, giving Jason a winning three-of-a-kind and knocking both Zach and Jeff out in 10th and 9th place. Bah! Humbug!

Now down to our final table of eight, tensions were tighter than Santa’s belt after a night of endless cookies and milk. The first player awake on Christmas morning was Andrew Hill Newman, who unwrapped K♦️️Q♦️️ and looked ready to deck the halls. But Guy Yosub, sitting pretty with 9♥️️9♣️️, was hiding a little Christmas magic himself. The flop came down 9♠️️K♣️️2♥️️. A holiday horror — top pair for Andrew but a set for Guy. The turn brought the T♣️️, giving Andrew a gutshot straight draw. Unfortunately, the river was a meaningless 7♠️️. Just like that, Andrew’s Christmas vacay was over, exiting in 8th place.

Next came Jeff Chan, bringing A♦️️J♦️️ to the holiday melee against Jason Mac holding the A♣️️Q♠️️. The flop: 8♠️️K♥️️Q♦️️, maintaining Jason’s lead. The turn was J♣️️, giving Jeff a pair for some seasonal hope to win alongside his chop outs. But the river? 6♥️️. Sorry, just socks and disappointment in this gift box, busting Jeff in 7th place.

Just back from Hawaii, the newly tan Jay Moriarty called all-in with Q♠️️9♦️️after a shove from Guy with K♣️️Q♣️️. Guy was still riding high due to his previous win and some holiday spirits from the bar downstairs. Jay would need a Christmas miracle to stay alive. Unfortunately, the board ran out 5♣️️3♦️️4♦️️5♠️️ T♣️️, sending him back to the tropics in 6th place, sobbing and singing “Mele Kalikimaka” all the way home.

Short stacked and out of options, Myles Warden bet the last of his Christmas bonus on 2♦️️3♦️️(AKA “Michael Jordan”) versus Jason Mac’s 7♦️️9♥️️. In a case of “talk about overkill”, the board ran out 6♦️️K♥️️7♥️️7♠️️9♠️️, giving Jason a boat to sail across a sea of poker chips, leaving Myles to drown in 5th place.

Then came our most exciting holiday showdown between Joshua Malina with J♥️️J♦️️ against Mike Schaub’s T♥️️T♣️️. The flop delivered Q♠️️9♥️️8♦️️, bringing gutshot straight draws for both players, but Joshua was still best. This is the one time you don’t want to hit your set. As Krampus would have it, the turn came the J♣️️, giving Mike a miracle straight! Now holding three-of-a-kind, Joshua needed the board to pair on the river to survive. The river: 6♥️️. And thus, Joshua’s WGA Poker Group debut came to an end in 4th place, but I get the feeling this won’t be his last appearance at our final table.

Jason Mac tried to sleigh one last player with A♦️️7♣️️, facing off against Mike’s J♥️️6♥️️. The flop of 7♦️️K♦️️J♠️️ put Mike out in front with a pair of Jacks. The turn brought 5♥️️, changing little. The river of 6♦️️was a needless snowball to Jason’s face, giving Mike two pair and busting Jason in 3rd place.

Down to two: Guy Yosub versus Mike Schaub. Who would be our new champ, and who would be going Ho Ho Home?! In the final hand, Mike was first to act, shoving all-in from the button with A♦️️5♥️️. Guy called all-in with the K♥️️8♣️️. With both players holding live cards, it was anybody’s game. The flop: T♥️️T♣️️6♣️️. A blizzard of tension set in. The turn: J♥️️. Mike just needed a clean river to make his mid-summer Christmas wish come true. Could he do it?! The river… 2♥️️! Looks like it’ll be a “Blue Christmas” for Guy as he bows out in 2nd place, but a holly jolly holiday for Mike as he becomes our newest WGA Poker Group champion! 🧦🏆

Here is a summary of the tournament results. Congrats to all our finalists and bounty hunters who knocked out everyone on Santa’s naughty list!

May 2025 Tournament Recap

The May WGA Poker Group tournament was a delicious luau of high-stakes action, where 31 players don their finest Hawaiian shirts and paddled into poker paradise, but only one would ride the wave to victory.

This tournament was extra special because we were also celebrating the birthday of your tournament director, Aaron Ho (that’s me!). Thank you for the well wishes and helping us eat the ridiculously large Lilo & Stitch-themed birthday cake. Now you might wonder, did your birthday translate to some extra luck on the felt? Well, watch the video below to find out!

The most insane board EVER in WGA Poker Group history occurred between Dan Signer and Nick Stanton, when they both found themselves all-in preflop with K♥️️Q♠️️ and 8♦️️8♣️️, respectively.  The flop of K♦️️Q♣️️8♠️️ gave Nick a set and Dan top two-pair. Dan then hit the miracle K♣️️on the turn, making a larger full house of Kings full of eights compared to Nick’s eights full of kings. With just 2% equity, Nick would need to find the one remaining eight in the deck to survive. Like Babe Ruth calling his shot, the dealer yelled “eight” as he peeled the river and to our astonishment, the 8♥️️ hit the felt, completing a four-of-a-kind for Nick! What is this, a James Bond movie?! Dan was left shaken AND stirred as Nick collected the pot. Watch the recap below!

After several hours of play and birthday cake was consumed, we finally arrived to our final table of nine. The first to sink beneath the tide was Roy “Boy Toy Roy” Chang when his 3♦️️3♥️️ was swept out to sea by Joyce “JLeee” Lee’s A♠️️7♠️️. After getting their chips all-in, the dealer served up the flop — 8♣️️7♥️️5♥️️. Joyce snagged middle pair and the lead, but Roy still had hope. Unfortunately, the K♣️️ and 2♦️️on the turn and river locked up the pot for Joyce, leaving Roy with a tsunami of disappointment as he finished in 9th place. Hey, for your first time playing with us, that’s not bad!

Guy “River Rat” Yosub swam in next, but his K♦️️2♥️️ was no match for Grant “Gugliacci” Taylor’s pocket sevens. The flop — K♠️️T♥️️7♣️️. Guy made top pair, but Grant had flopped a set! The turn of 9♥️️ and river of J♥️️ were no help to Guy, officially wiping out in 8th place.

With blinds at 10k-20k, Lisa Dickey turned up the heat and sent Erika “Lucky Enough” Kaestle up in flames in back-to-back hands. Lisa’s A♠️️6♦️️ roasted Erika’s K♣️️2♦️️ when the flop landed Q♣️️9♥️️J♦️️. The turn — 5♦️️. The river — 9♠️️. Ace high would be enough to scoop, leaving Erika with just 2k in chips as she clung to her life raft. One hand later, Lisa smelled blood in the water and struck again, shoving all-in with her A♥️️9♠️️ versus Erika’s J♦️️2♠️️. The board of 3♥️️3♣️️7♦️️K♥️️ 5♣️️ was no help, leaving Erika to drown in shark-infested waters and a 7th place finish.

Producer and magician, Adam Cole, tried to conjure up some extra chips when he shoved all-in against Randi Barnes. Always the skeptic, Randi found a call. To our surprise, they revealed the same hand — A♥️️J♦️️ for Adam and A♠️️J♥️️ for Randi. Their hands should tie 97% of the time, but a flop of 7♠️️7♣️️3♠️️ gave Adam a sweat and Randi a freeroll as she held the valuable A♠️️ in her hand. The turn — 2♠️️. Could it be?  Runner-runner flush?  No one is THAT lucky.  The dealer slowly peeled the river… T♠️️! Shock and awe filled the room as Randi made the nut flush, leaving Adam with just 7k in chips. Though he managed a quadruple-up shortly after, the ocean currents pulled him under when he was forced all-in with 6♦️️3♦️️ against Grant’s A♦️️K♠️️. The board of Q♥️️6♥️️A♠️️5♣️️A♣️️ meant Grant’s trip aces would sink Adam like the Titanic in 6th place.

Short on chips, Lisa made one last stand, but her Q♣️️7♣️️ got immediately buried in the sand by Randi’s pocket aces (A♣️️A♦️️). The board of T♠️️5♣️️9♠️️9♦️️3♠️️ was no help, with Lisa getting officially lei’d off in 5th place. They say in marriage, “What’s mine is yours.” This is proof that it’s actually true!

Joyce tried to surf up some chips with A♦️️8♣️️, but Jay “Moose” Moriarty’s Q♥️️T♥️️ carved out two pair on a flop of J♥️️T♦️️Q♦️️. The turn of A♥️️ gave Joyce some more outs to win or tie, but the river of 5♠️️ was not one of them. Joyce may have wiped out in 4th place here, but I have no doubt she’ll be splashing at a final table again in no time.

Next up, Jay shoved all-in from the small blind with A♠️️9♥️️ and received a call from Grant in the big blind with the K♠️️T♥️️. The board ran out Q♥️️A♣️️A♥️️3♣️️9♣️️, giving Jay a boat and a tidal wave of chips pushing toward him.  Grant was left with only 2k behind, eventually getting forced all-in with J♠️️4♣️️ racing against Randi’s pocket twos. The flop — K♦️️5♥️️6♠️️. The turn — K♠️️. The river — K♣️️. Pocket deuces never loses!  Randi stacked up the chips as Grant was left shipwrecked in 3rd place.

The final storm raged between Jay and Randi in a dramatic, all-in showdown. On the flop of 9♠️️6♠️️4♦️️, Randi shoved with A♣️️6♥️️ for second pair. Jay called with J♠️️8♠️️, sitting on a flush draw, backdoor straight draw, and hopes of a higher pair.  It was a virtual coinflip, with Jay having a slight equity advantage due to his abundant number of outs despite only having Jack high. The dealer reached for the turn… 9♣️️. No help, but Jay still had a 34% chance to improve. Everything hinged on the river… 3♥️️! Miss! Randi’s pair held, sending the Beach Boy back to the mainland while earning herself the title of big kahuna! Congratulations Randi on becoming a 2x WGA Poker Group Champion!

Here is a summary of the tournament results. Congrats to all our finalists!

1st – Randi Barnes
2nd – Jay “Moose “Moriarty
3rd – Grant “Gugliacci” Taylor
4th – Joyce “JLeee” Lee

7th – Erika “Lucky Enough” Kaestle
8th – Guy “River Rat” Yosub
9th – Roy “Boy Toy Roy” Cheng

March 2025 Tournament Recap

The March WGA Poker Group tournament was a Saint Patrick’s Day-inspired clash of bluffs, bad beats, and bounties. With 38 players vying for a taste of poker immortality, there was no telling which lucky leprechaun would bring home the green. After several hours of play, the field narrowed to our final nine lads and lassies.

The first elimination came when Taylor “Kraps Kween” Blackburn went all-in with the 9♦️️5♥️️ (AKA: “The Dolly Parton”) against Nick “Pasta” Apostolina’s K♥️️T♣️️. The flop of K♣️️7♥️️3♠️️ gave Nick top pair, and Taylor was left praying for a miracle. The turn brought the Q♣️️, and the river sealed her fate with a 4♠️️. With no help from the board, Taylor hit the rail in 9th place. Tough break! So much for “Long live the Kween!”

Next up, Jeff “Helpcomputer” Meyers put his tournament life on the line with A♦️️9♠️️ versus Jay “Moose” Moriarty’s Q♦️️8♦️️ on a flop of 9♥️️J♣️️2♣️️, giving Jeff top pair against Jay’s gutshot straight draw. Unfortunately for Jeff, the turn was the almighty T♣️️, completing Jay’s straight. The meaningless 6♦️️ on the river confirmed Jay’s victory, leaving Jeff to finish in 8th place. The “Helpcomputer” had finally been hacked.

A while later, Margaux Brooke’s T♣️️T♦️️ found itself in a horse race against Brandon “The Professor” Boyce’s K♥️️J♣️️. Which one would gallop to victory? The flop revealed 4♠️️A♠️️J♥️️, giving Brandon middle pair and a commanding lead. The 9♦️️ on the turn and J♠️️ on the river locked up the win, leaving Margaux to finish in 7th place. It figures Brandon would play that hand, men always love Jack-King off. 😆

Next, Waco O’Guin found himself all-in in with 9♦️️2♦️️ against Brandon’s A♣️️T♥️️. While the 9-2 may be great to double-down in blackjack, it’s a real uphill battle in hold’em. This proved true as the flop rolled out 5♠️️4♥️️8♠️️, helping no one. The turn of 6♠️️ added a gutshot straight possibility for Waco. Finally, the dealer revealed the A♦️️ on the river, securing Brandon’s win. The bloody siege on Waco had come to end, earning himself a 6th place finish.

Final table frequent flyer, Jay “Moose” Moriarty, was next to wage war when his A♠️️T♠️️ clashed with Adam Cole’s K♦️️8♦️️. With their chips already in the middle, the flop of 5♣️️2♠️️J♦️️ kept Jay in the lead, as did the Q♥️️ on the turn. As long he could fade an 8 or King, Jay would score a huge win. Adam stared up at the poker gods and prayed. “One time!” Like a bolt of lightning, the 8♣️️ fell on the river to everyone’s shock and awe, leading Adam to double-up and leaving Jay with nothing but a single poker chip. But hey, “Chip and a chair, right?!” Unfortunately, a few hands later, Jason “Sneaky” Cho’s pocket queens defeated Jay’s Ace-Queen to earn him 5th place. The Moose was no longer on the loose.

Next, Nick “Pasta” Apostolina found himself in a great position to double with K♦️️T♣️️ against Brandon Boyce’s K♥️️9♥️️. His optimism quickly vanished as the flop of 3♦️️7♥️️9♦️️ gave Brandon top pair. The K♣️️ on the turn and Q♥️️ on the river couldn’t save Nick, finishing in 4th place. Pasta night was officially canceled.

Down to just a few big blinds, Jason Cho made his final stand with 7♣️️5♦️️, hoping to catch something against Adam Cole’s K♠️️7♠️️. While dominated, Jason found some hope on the flop of J♣️️4♥️️8♣️️, giving him a gutshot straight draw and backdoor flush outs. Alas, the 4♣️️ and 8♦️️ on the turn and river were no help, sending Jason home in 3rd place.

Now down to our final two players, we wouldn’t have to wait long to see who would be crowned our new champ. On the very first hand of heads-up play, we saw Adam Cole call all-in with the 6♦️️4♦️️ for his tournament life against Brandon Boyce’s Q♦️️8♠️️. The flop brought 9♦️️5♣️️A♦️️, giving Adam a flush draw, raising his equity to 49%. It was now a coin-flip to decide who would win this massive hand. The turn A♣️️ paired the board, changing nothing. As everyone held their breath, the J♥️️ fell on the river, sealing Brandon’s victory. “The Professor” proved that a mix of skill, strategy, and just a little luck of the Irish can take you all the way to the end of the rainbow. Enjoy your pot of gold! Congratulations Brandon!

Here is a summary of the tournament results. Congrats to all our finalists!

1st – Brandon “The Professor” Boyce
2nd – Adam Cole
3rd – Jason “Sneaky” Cho
4th – Nick “Pasta” Apostolina
5th – Jay “Moose “Moriarty
6th – Waco O’Guin
7th – Margaux Brooke
8th – Jeff “Helpcomputer” Meyers
9th – Taylor “Kraps Kween” Blackburn

Special thanks to my wife, Nichole, for helping run the tournament as well as to Jay Moriarty and the Burbank Moose Lodge. I’d also like to thank our amazing dedicated dealers, Jeff Meyers, Adam Cole, Jason Cho, and Nick Apostolina.

Our next tournament is planned for May. Please stay tuned for updates via facebook or the e-newsletter. Also, please subscribe to our YouTube channel. Until then, good luck and enjoy these photos from the tournament. Sláinte!
